Unless you’re a teacher, the dawn of summer and closing of school doors comes with few parental perks. Sure, you may slip away from work for a week at the beach, but even that’s going to cost you 40 hours of vacation time and probably a couple grand..

Family fun is always a way to make memories that will last a lifetime. So, grab every chance to bring the family together to play, to eat and to laugh. Father’s Day is that kind of day for families to come together, the young, the old and the in-between, eating and playing and enjoying each other’s company.

While I myself have only attended one spin class in my life, I know a few people in our community who attend classes regularly. In fact, after talking with a couple of these folks for this article, I’m pretty much set on attending a class or two in the near future.

T is the season to enjoy patios! What is it about simply sitting outside with the caress of a nice breeze that is so refreshing? Whether we are recharging at lunch or relaxing after work, there are many Shreveport- Bossier City restaurants with great outdoor seating.

short on time? MAKE IT EASY
I still crave a good DIY project, though, and because of my personality, I can’t sit still for that long. I’d like to share a few simple (and inexpensive) DIY projects that I’ve completed around our home. Each project cost less than $15 and took less than an hour to complete.

Cindy Gleason Johnson grew up in a family of good cooks. She learned each day as she cooked alongside her mother and both grandmothers. She began to master the skill at an early age, and by the time she reached high school, Johnson was so adept in the kitchen she could prepare an entire family meal by herself.

“I carry some of my favorite oils with me in my purse and pull them out to use as needed. A drop of peppermint and a drop of wild orange together is uplifting and enlivening when I am dragging or tired. I also diffuse essential oils at home daily.”.

finding comfort NOSHING
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil; cook the rotini at a boil until tender yet firm to the bite, about 8 minutes, drain. Mix pesto, olive oil, salt, granulated garlic and black pepper in a bowl; add rotini. Toss to coat. Fold in tomatoes, mozzarella and fresh basil.

Holiday in Dixie Cotillion
Grand Carnival: A Night in Venice, was the theme for the 68th Holiday In Dixie Cotillion. George Patton Fritze reigned as Rex LXVIII, and Shelby Elizabeth Easterwood wore the crown as Regina LXVIII.

Derby Party at Norton
R.W. Norton Art Gallery’s front lawn in historic South Highlands was the setting for the second Shreveport Derby Day Festival May 7. More than 1,000 people spent the afternoon enjoying mint juleps served by Wine Country Bistro & Bottle Shop and mid-afternoon snacks provided by Rhino Coffee and Buttercups Cupcakes.

Artini
Flavored martinis were shaken, stirred and poured at Harrah’s Louisiana Downs’ Red River Room during the always-fun Artini April 16. The annual libation-themed fund-raiser for the Bossier Arts Council featured 17 different locally owned restaurants serving up their best martini to guests.

Plantation Ball
The 64th annual Plantation Ball continued its traditions of a formal presentation, Virginia Reel and old-fashioned plantation breakfast. Held April 22 at the Scottish Rite Temple as part of Holiday in Dixie, the event began as a way for area planters to squire their lovely ladies about.

An Evening for Healers
The LSU Health Shreveport Foundation hosted their annual fund-raising event, An Evening for Healers, April 28, at the Shreveport Convention Center. Honored that night were physicians and other health-care professionals who provide lifesaving and life-changing care to patients in the community.
