Measuring Milestones
Fortunately, there are few things my daughter loves more than reading, so we decided on a bookworm-themed party. With the assistance of Cristy Taylor and the Broadmoor Branch of Shreve Memorial Library, we were set for an amazing storytime that took the pressure off Tilly’s very pregnant mama to entertain a group of toddlers for a couple of hours.

STEM EDUCATION
Why is this important? According to ACT, only 45 percent of high school graduates in 2011 were ready for college courses in math with only 30 percent being ready for science.

The Reality of ‘easy’
Everywhere we turn there’s a list of “life hacks” designed to speed up getting stuff done – hypothetically so you can do what you really want to do instead of dusting baseboards or making bacon. Well, maybe bacon is a bad example because I can always make time for bacon.

Homework
Anew school year has begun and so has the homework. Some parents may be asking, “Is homework really necessary?” “Does it really help my child?” “Why can’t teachers just teach what kids need to know at school and leave it at that?” Some parents see homework as another chore they have to see that gets done, thus taking away more of their limited time.

Bold and Beautiful
I am talking about that old desk that sits in the corner of your bedroom that, if like mine, is used to house a sewing machine. (Hey, I had hopes of one day becoming a very talented seamstress!) Or maybe it is a piece of furniture that just serves as a catch-all for miscellaneous papers and bills? I have quite a few of those places.

REWORKING
Beginning with the living room, I started by widening the seating area, bringing in a larger rug and repurposing two elephant accent tables, which flanked the fireplace, into a new coffee table. We cleared the shelves, then replaced, by grouping like items and only having two to three items per shelf.

Of Flybaords & Cheesesteaks
Ark-La-Tex Flyboard has the closet alternative: a board that thrusts itself above water at Caddo Lake. It is literally a hoverboard above water. You are atop a board propelled into the air by two powerful jets of water. You are flying. For a moment, you are Marty McFly.

Allison A. Jones, stockholder/officer for Davidson, Jones & Summers, A Professional Law Corporation, is one well-rounded, woman who knows how to thrive. She received her undergraduate degree from LSU Baton Rouge in 1982 and juris doctorate from LSU School of Law in 1985.

THE VOICE OF THE RED RIVER
Kate Archer Kent starts her job at 4 a.m. on the air for Red River Radio. Kent is essentially a one-person shop gathering news from around the Ark-La-Tex as a news producer for the nonprofit affiliated with National Public Radio. In her spare time, Kent practices yoga and spends time with her family.

Derby Days
Ryder was first inspired to create her unique hats when one day she was looking for feathers online to use in a dress design. “I accidentally came across a hat site,” Ryder said. “I opened the link and thought, ‘I could do this!’” She’s been doing it ever since.

FEARLESS WOMEN
She couldn’t have given a more accurate description of athletics in 2014. The barriers for women in sports are breaking down thanks to the hard work put in by women in the past – and today’s athletes are ready to carry that torch.

Boots & Buckles
“I started to take lessons. The more I was exposed to the horse world, I realized it’s not just riding – there’s competition involved. I thought about it all the time, dreamed about it when I should be studying. It wasn’t something I just picked. I was either going to give into it or be a miserable person,” she said.

For Love of the Game
For Goins, sports have always been part of her life, and she knew she wanted to work in sports journalism early. She remembers sitting in her family’s kitchen along with a committee of coaches, including her dad, watching game film projected on the wall.

In Her Court
“It is an honor to be compared to someone who has accomplished so much as a player and is now the first woman to be hired as a full time assistant coach in the NBA,” Gayler said. “In returning to a championship team and with Becky joining a championship team brings an expectation for excellence that I’m confident we can both provide.

World-Class Weights
Female weightlifting has only been a recognized Olympic sport since 2000, but many of the competitors come to Shreveport specifically to train at Louisiana State University Shreveport with head coach Dr. Kyle Pierce and his program.

RIDING SOLO
“I never thought I would want to ride,” she said. Delaney was born in Maine and moved around growing up, as her father was a member of the military. When transferred to Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, she stayed in the area. She now works in commercial insurance.

Football Feast
Like many people, I live for football. Of all the sports that can be watched live or in the comfort of your living room, I believe none are more engrossing than football. For me personally, the new season begins in April when the NFL draft occurs. It’s at that point that I know the excitement is but a few months away.

Fall Fashion
blogspot.com. Though she is new to blogging, LeBlanc said her perspective offers a fresh take on current trends with her degree in fashion merchandising. LeBlanc posts daily showing her outfits to readers and said she is eager for fall trends that are popping up everywhere.

Style For Auction
LaKesha Mosley, development and public information director for The Salvation Army, said last year, the nonprofit raised over $4,500 from proceeds from the purse auction.

AGENDA
VIOLIN SPECTACULAR WITH MAYUKO KAMIO, The violin rules the night, featuring Tchaikovsky Competition Gold Medalist Mayuko Kamio playing Prokofiev and the SSO’s newly appointed Concertmaster Matt Albert playing the devilishly difficult solo part in Rimsky-Korsakov’s epic symphonic poem, Scheherazade.

Fun For the Family SEPT. 4, 11, 18 & 27: HOMEGROWN: A LOCAL FARMERS MARKET AT PROVENANCE IN THE PARK, Enjoy shopping at three mid-week fall markets from 3-7 p.m. Sept. 4, 11 and 18 and the Homegrown Fall Farmers Market at Provenance from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept.

Baron’s Ball
The American Cancer Society held the Baron’s Ball with the theme “Tip Your Hat Towards a Cure” Aug. 16 at 601 Spring St. in Shreveport. This year’s Baron’s Ball event was in memory of Suzy Ryan, an honorary chair who lost her battle with cancer in 2013. Auction items included four LSU vs.

Making Strides
Acrowd of about 100 were greeted by a group of cheerleaders to the breakfast kickoff event for the Making Strides event hosted by the American Cancer Society. Guests were asked to fill out cards to sign up to be a team leader for the 5K race.

Cooking Classic
Area politicians and civic and community leaders rolled up their sleeves to serve and prepare dishes for the Southern University at Shreveport Foundation’s 15th annual Gentlemen’s Cooking Classic on June 21 at the Shreveport Convention Center. The theme for this year’s event was “Southern Cooking Meets Zydeco.
