University at The Oaks Guest Speaker: Cheryl White, PhD, assistant history professor at LSUS Monday, May 1, 4 p.m. Franks Community Centre Cheryl White’s monthly University at The Oaks series for May will focus on “The Wars of the Roses,” a series of wars fought for the control of the throne of England. The two rivals were the House of Lancaster and the House of York. The House of Lancaster was associated with a red rose and the House of York with a white. This is how these series of wars received their name. The two fought for more than 30 years. The final victory went to the House of Lancaster, but the twist to these bloody battles is eventually the two Houses were united in marriage.

Guest Speaker: Jacqueline Gore Tuesday, May 23, 3:30 p.m. Chapel at The Oaks Jacqueline Gore returns to The Oaks with a review of Jessica Shattuck’s “The Women in the Castle,” the story of three German women before, during and after Hitler’s rule. Marianne von Lingenfels fulfills the promise she made to her late husband, a Resistance leader who was murdered in a failed attempt to assassinate Hitler. She shelters the wives and children of his coconspirators in a Bavarian castle that has fallen in disrepair. Marianne hopes that their shared grief and similar circumstances will bring them together. The women quickly realize that their past and current choices will be hard to overcome. Cost: $5, nonresidents. Registration is required.
