The weather is getting cooler and with the fall colors and great temperatures comes something that’s not so great – the high temperatures of the flu. Yes, it’s getting to be flu season in Louisiana. And it’s up to you to help prevent the spread of flu. Get a flu shot. The vaccines are available in regular and high doses (the latter for those 65 and older). There’s even a “painless” version called the intradermal that is delivered with a very small needle. But one thing’s for sure, a needle stick is a LOT less stressful than getting the flu. Tessa Albritton, pharmacy director for Willis-Knighton Health System, says it takes two weeks for the vaccine to be fully effective, so getting your shot early is important. The immunity will hold you throughout the flu season and you can go and do without worrying if the person who used the grocery cart before you was part of the “shopping sick” crowd. Of course, good hygiene is important too—handwashing can’t be overemphasized. But when you want to prevent the flu, it’s up to you…get a flu shot. And don’t listen to those who say the shot can give you the flu. It’s made with dead virus and a dead virus cannot give you the flu. Check with your doctor or stop by Quick Care any day between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. to get your vaccine. It’s covered by most insurance plans. See also
