CHANGING OF THE GUARD
In keeping with its recent momentum of change, the Shreveport Regional Arts Council has named Henry Price as its new president of the 35-member board. Price earned the new title in May when current president O. Delton Harrison Jr. stepped into the honored position of president emeritus.

Back to Basics
According to the Center for Families’ Executive Director Laura Brucia Hamm and Clinical Director Dr. Katie Garcia, beginning to think about the upcoming year can be daunting, but parents can help ease the transition by gently engaging students in conversation about how to make the school year great.

The Method
Some features of the Montessori environment inside the classroom include mixed ages, student choice of activity within a range of options, discovery models that encourage students to learn hands-on from working with materials rather than by verbal instruction and uninterrupted blocks of work time.

Higher Ed
The decision to pursue higher education can provide opportunities into the everevolving world of work, especially in the Ark-La-Tex area. Bossier Parish Community College and Louisiana State University Shreveport are offering new and dynamic programs to give their students a competitive edge after graduation.

A New Hope
Both of those schools were failing public middle schools that were taken over and reopened through the Recovery School District, a special school district run by the Louisiana Department of Education that intervenes in the management of chronically lowperforming schools.

Partnership
Between 15-18 percent of children have a chronic condition, which is de ned as a condition that affects a child’s normal activities and may require hospitalizations, home health care or extensive medical care. Asthma, diabetes and epilepsy are some of the more common chronic conditions children experience, along with obesity, ADHD/ADD and dyslexia.

Alternative
Winningham graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. But not all homeschooling mothers need such credentials. “The most important point I can make is that any parent who really tries can educate their children,” Winningham said.

MELANOMA
Melanoma, a skin cancer rising steadily in both men and women, can affect anyone from various ages and ethnicities. Although it is more common in lighter-skinned individuals, melanoma can present itself anywhere on the skin, even in places that aren’t typically exposed to sunlight.

Shock is a condition in which blood pressure is too low and not enough oxygenated blood can sustain your body. The medical disorder of shock is not the “shock” that people feel from a sudden traumatic event. In the United States, hospital emergency departments report more than one million cases of shock each year.

Downstairs in artspace’s FUN-A- TORIUM, Elizabeth Holladay Jackson and Jeormie Journell have created the world of “Moonhaven: Lair of the Leafmen” – an interactive playground exhibit based on William Joyce’s book “The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs.

A little over a month ago I began a new full-time career. I’m now selling cars and trucks at Red River Chevrolet in Bossier City.
