But being a vanilla cone all the time can sometimes make you crave something else. Meeting Jordan Poorman and Laura Jackson was an eye opener – in dessert terms they are far from vanilla. They are both beautiful, edgy and have a contagious burst of confidence in their appearance.

celebrating a MILESTONE
It was hot. In fact, our wedding date was the hottest day on record. A scorching 101 degrees for our outdoor, sunset ceremony.

the LAZY exerciser
The art teacher at St. Mark’s Cathedral School is also a member of Bike Shreveport, and I have seen her at various rides, helping out at the Bike Container, and “womaning” the booth at the organization’s free tune-up event at Great Raft Brewing last month.

oh the HORROR!
I love the idea of being a completely crazy, different persona than I normally am (which really, I am pretty crazy in my normal life too). The idea of transformation is great when it comes to your home too.

communicating with TEENS
If you have a teenager in your home, you are familiar with your questions being answered in one word sentences that only consist of one syllable. Better dialogue can occur by changing the way we ask questions. Be encouraged that you and your teen can learn to dialogue with one another in an effective way.

JOB shadowing
Katie Kilpatrick-Gata has almost a decade of experience in the beauty industry. She is a Shreveport native and has worked for Trish McEvoy and Laura Mercier. Katie owns a local studio space and is available for clients. Katie truly has a passion for empowering women to look and feel their very best at any stage in life – from soccer moms to CEOs.

Flanking the sofa are beautiful acid stained gold side tables with brass/lucite lamps from House of Carpet & Lighting. The awesome raw steel drum shade from Southeastern Salvage is about as masculine as chandeliers come. Brass accessories, old books and objects all from Kings Antique Mall and Designer’s Showroom finish off the room.

WHAT’S for lunch?
To some, my description might appear a tad dramatic, and I’ll admit I have had my moments, but I’m sure there are other moms who can relate to me either this very school year or in years past.

Not to date myself, but I remember when a trip to Dallas was required to satisfy a craving for Lebanese or Thai food. Now Shreveport can enjoy these and many more choices in our own neighborhoods. One of my favorite go-to lunch spots featuring Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese cuisine is Danh’s Garden.

Jessica Bartlett MOM on a mission
Last year, I went on a mission trip to serve in an orphanage in China. It had always been a dream of mine to go and love on the orphans there. I am so grateful to have followed my heart and went because this is where I met our fourth child, Ava. As soon as I saw her in her crib at four months old, I knew she was my child.

Cooking through Cancer
The Bossier City native and mother of four was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. After undergoing a double mastectomy and chemotherapy, she has been cancer-free for over five years. Following her diagnosis, Procell’s faith, loved ones and medical team helped her heal.

Pastry paradise
Preheat the oven to 425. In a large bowl, mix the ricotta and parmesan cheese, eggs, oregano, garlic and feta cheese until well-blended. Brush melted butter onto one sheet of phyllo dough at a time, and layer them on a baking sheet until you have seven sheets.

FUN WITH THE GIRLS OCT. 3: FALL AND NEW FASHION FOR 2015, St. Pius X Ladies Guild/ Charity Fundraiser will host their eighth annual style show and luncheon. Joyce Jiles of Dillard’s/St. Vincent Mall will present their latest fall fashions. Lunch will be served by Angelwood Catering, and many door prizes will be given.

Auction Against AIDS
With over 200 silent auction items and 20 live auction items, guests had plenty to bid on Aug. 29 at the Shreveport Convention Center Captain Shreve Ballroom for the Philadelphia Center’s 26th Auction Against AIDS. The auction’s theme was “Wicked Wonderland,” and plenty of guests dressed up with the “Alice in Wonderland” theme in mind.

Super Derby
Hat contestants bring style, creativity and fun Harrah’s Louisiana Downs hosted its annual Super Derby event Sept. 12. Along with a day filled with races, women lined up to enter in the annual hat contest. A winning hat was chosen from the following categories: Spirit of Louisiana, Classic and Most Original.

Baron’s Ball
The 2015 Cattle Baron’s Ball, which is a Western-themed event, was held from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at Harrah’s Louisiana Downs in Bossier City. Guests listened to music by Hipshot and dined on food by Silver Star Smokehouse. Guests also had the opportunity to participate in both silent and live auctions.

Life Savers Gala
The 2015 Life Savers gala, “A Black Tie Affair,” was held Aug. 29 at the Riverfront Ballroom at Sam’s Town Casino. This annual dinner/dance formal event, complete with a silent auction, was part of a big fundraiser for the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. These funds will help serve competitive cancer research grants at LSU Health.

Exonerated
The Williamson County Sheriff’s Department “investigated” Chris Morton’s murder with Michael as their No. 1 suspect. Five weeks later, they arrested him. However, the problem was that certain exculpatory evidence was never handed over to the defense (a problem the Texas legislature later corrected with the Michael Morton Act).
