Dearborn, MI—Routine samples of the Green Cedar Ackawi cheese collected and tested by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) tested positive for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, the company announced last Friday.

The following product has been recalled: Green Cedar Ackawi cheese in small clear plastic shrink wrapped packaging bearing a “sell by” date of Mar. 26, 2019, or later. The sell by date is on a white sticker on the back of the product.

The issue was discovered on Nov. 9, 2018, during a routine inspection by MDARD’s Food and Dairy Division and FDA. The product was distributed at retail locations in East Dearborn and Dearborn Heights, MI.

There have been no reports of adverse health impacts or reactions related to the consumption of the product as of last Friday.

Meanwhile, Alebrije Dist Wholesale is collaborating with health officials due to a positive finding of Salmonella in a sample of Quesillo “Queseria La Milagrosa.” Alebrije Dist Wholesale is voluntarily recalling the amount of 100 kilograms of Quesillo Quesseria La Milagrosa.

While “Alebrije Cheese” has not been found positive for Salmonella, Alebrije Dist Wholesale has decided to voluntarily recall the specific 498 “Alebrije Cheese” pieces that were imported during the same period out of an abundance of caution.

Affected product was distributed the dates between October 23 and October 24 through retail sale and direct delivery, in Los Angeles, CA. The specific product subject to recall is identified as:

• Quesillo “Queseria La Milagrosa”, wrapped in a basic plastic bag with a yellow label with two presentations, one-half kilogram and one kilogram; and • “Alebrije Cheese,” wrapped in a basic plastic bag with an orange and blue label with three presentations, onehalf kilogram, one kilogram and five kilograms.

The recall was as the result of a routine sampling inspection by the California Department of Food and Agriculture which revealed that the finished products contained the bacteria.
