The Boston mayoral primary is a crucial event in the city’s political landscape, serving as the de facto final election in a town where a non-partisan Democratic primary sets the stage for a general election. The 2025 preliminary election pits Mayor Michelle Wu, with a significant track record, against Josh Kraft, the well-funded head of the Patriot Foundation. The race, which features four candidates on the ballot, will be narrowed down to two people who will face off in the general election. Mayor Michelle Wu entered the race with the distinct advantage of incumbency, a factor that has proven nearly insurmountable in Boston mayoral history. As the city’s first woman and person of color elected to the office, her campaign highlighted her administration’s focus on progressive policies, including expanding affordable housing and early childhood education, as well as addressing transportation and climate issues. Her platform focuses on climate resilience, equitable economic recovery, and community-centered governance, as well as a vision for an equitable city. . In stark contrast, her primary challenger, Josh Kraft, the son of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, mounted a formidable campaign without a traditional political background. His campaign focused on themes of public safety and constituent services, positioning himself as an outsider who was more attuned to the day-to-day concerns of Boston residents.
