You have to hand it to Zara’s Collision Center when it comes to the best use of Bambi in ad campaigns. Each fall, as local deer prepare to get stupid and start wandering on roadways, especially after dark, Zara’s comes up with the cleverest billboards this side of the ever-changing chalkboard outside the Grab-A-Java on South Sixth Street. Our personal favorite is “The Buck Stopped Here” sign from a few years back that featured a photo of skid marks on asphalt, but we also enjoyed “Heads Or Tails You Lose” that came with a picture of a trophy buck looking back over its shoulder. This year’s campaign kicks off on Saturday, as the company says it will give Contact Ministries 5 percent of the cost of repairing damage from a vehicle vs. deer incident, with a cap of $250 (yikes, that works out to some expensive venison). The program dubbed Doenation (groan) lasts through the end of the year. Almost makes you want to fi re up the Toyota at dusk and go driving crazy fast on country roads where the corn is still high. Not.
