ART | Abstract expressionism at UIS

Sublime Light, a visual art exhibit by Lyle Salmi at the University of Illinois Springfield’s Visual Arts Gallery, explores the relationship between light and space through the vehicle of abstract expressionistic paintings. Salmi uses scale, color palette and brush strokes, among other techniques, to root his paintings in the here and now and impress meaning onto his work. Lyle is currently the associate professor of painting, drawing and printmaking in addition to serving as chair of the Art Department at Millikin University. Past accomplishments include an MFA from Arizona State University in 1988, a National Endowment for the Arts Midwest fellowship for painting in 1995, multiple artist in residency positions plus lectures, juror gigs and more. Sublime Light runs March 2-26, and is available for viewing Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. through 6 p.m. The opening reception will be Thursday, March 5, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. For more information, visit http://uis.edu/visualarts/gallery.
