 HISTORY | African-American awareness Many Black History Month events are scheduled to take place during the month of February around the area. Most of the colleges have a slew of commemorative events. At the University of Illinois Springfield Brookens Auditorium, Wednesday, Feb. 9, hear a talk by Chigozie “Gozie” Umeadi, former UIS men’s basketball player and now basketball operations coordinator for National Basketball Association (NBA). Also at this venue, A Celebration of Gospel will take place on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. Illinois State Military Museum has unveiled a new series of displays telling the story of the service of African-American Soldiers in the Illinois National Guard in the Civil War and World War I.
