AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION

There are few issues of such immediate importance as teaching young women about sexual assault prevention. The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network estimates that a sexual assault occurs every 12 minutes – usually against women. It can be a devastating experience, and that’s why the Springfield-based Prairie Center Against Sexual Assault and Illinois College are working to educate women on sexual assault. IC- ACTS Theater Troupe writes and performs dramatic short plays about issues such as rape myths, dating violence, bystander responsibility and even popular culture like the “Jersey Shore” TV series. The first performance – which is geared toward high school, college and adult-aged women – will be 6-7 p.m. May 5 at Benedictine University’s College Auditorium, 1500 N. Fifth St. It is not recommended for children younger than 12. The play is free and open to the public, with a free self-defense seminar immediately afterward for registered participants age 12 and up. For more information or to register for the seminar, call PCASA at 744-2560.
