Theater companies recognize their own

The Shreveport Little Theatre held its 13th annual Bravo! Awards on July 21 at the Margaret Place venue with more than 100 in attendance.

The 92nd season membership voted on the awards in several categories.

SLT’s board member and actor Kim Price and SLT Academy administrator Nancy Carey served as the masters of ceremony.

Award winners were: Best Production: “To Kill a Mockingbird”; Best Lagniappe Production: “The Diary of Anne Frank”; Best Actor in a Leading Role: Robert Young in “To Kill a Mockingbird”; Best Actress in a Leading Role: Seva May in “Always, Patsy Cline”; Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Graham Montgomery in “To Kill a Mockingbird”; Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Cara Johnston in “The Trip to Bountiful”; Best Actor in a Featured Role: Tom Wallace in “The Trip to Bountiful”; Best Actress in a Featured Role: Mary Joris in “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

SLT board president Mike Ferrell presented the Board of Directors’ Award to Scott Hardwick, the President’s Award to Allison Hannon and Chris Gonzales, and the President’s Award of Merit to Alan Mathison. Robert Darrow, SLT’s managing and artistic director, awarded his Director’s Award of Merit to Ridley Walker and Phil Stewart.

SLT Academy presented graduating seniors Joey Bills, Allison Hannon, Lyric LaPlante and Ridley Walker with scholarships for their work and participation in the academy.

You might remember Montgomery, winner of this year’s Best Actor in a Supporting Role, has since moved to a role in “Kinky Boots” on Broadway.

Ynot Awards

Across Caddo Lake, the Opera House Theatre Players of Jefferson have announced the nominees for their annual Ynot Awards to be presented 6 p.m. Aug. 14 at the theater group’s annual meeting and dinner.

That evening, awards will be presented for Best Actress and Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Supporting Actress and Actor, Rising Star Teen (13-17) both male and female, Rising Star Jr. (6-12) and Best Production. This year the troupe produced “Cheaper by the Dozen,” “Mama Won’t Fly” and “The Cemetery Club.”

Also to be announced at the dinner are the selections by the board of directors for The Dorothy Award – named for the group’s president, Dorothy Craver, who celebrated her 102nd birthday last February – the Big Heart Award and the Lucille M. Terry Cultural and Performing Arts Award.

Members of the organization are eligible to vote, and those joining by Aug. 1 will receive a ballot. Reservations for the award dinner are $15 per person and $7 for a child ordering pizza and may be made by calling 903-665-2310. • All Y’all Live is a live storytelling event featuring true stories told live. The third installment of All Y’all Live, “Under the Influence,” will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at Marjorie Lyons Playhouse on the campus of Centenary College of Louisiana. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Addiction of Northwest Louisiana. Admission is $10, and advance ticket purchase is highly recommended, according to the presenters.

• “Smokey Joe’s Café” comes to the Strand Oct. 10. The show features The Coasters, a musical revue showcasing 39 pop standards, includes rock and roll and rhythm and blues songs written by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The original Broadway cast recording, “Smokey Joe’s Cafe: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller,” won a Grammy Award in 1996.

The revue opened on Broadway in 1995, running for 2,036 performances, making it the longest-running musical revue in Broadway history. It also had a London run in 1996 and was nominated for seven Tony Awards.
