Jazz: The 11th annual Yazzy Celebration of Jazz, held April 26 at RiverView Hall, was a salute to the women of jazz. The Theatre of the Performing Arts of Shreveport sponsored the event. The theater was formed to foster culture and arts and to offer multi-disciplined arts programs for children and adults.

Tea: Participants came dressed wearing hats and walking down a pink carpet to the C. Wright Pink Ribbon Project’s second Spring Tea on April 27 at Stonewall Baptist Church. The fundraiser increases awareness and raises funds to provide fi nancial assistance to breast cancer patients. The centerpieces were spectacular. One featured a woman’s 20-year-old wedding bouquet and cake plate. Yolanda Duckworth of the Feist- Weiller Cancer Center spoke on breast cancer education while wearing her mother’s hat. Segments of the program included scripture, poetry, a mime and a saxophonist. Other churches helped boost attendance this year.

Rock of Ages: The Strand Theatre in downtown Shreveport played host to “Rock of Ages” on May 1. The hit Broadway musical features legendary rock songs from the ’70s and ’80s from artists such as Styx, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister and Journey. The packed house was on its feet for the fi nale of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.” The last show of The Strand’s 2012-2013 season is “The Addams Family” on June 18. Also recently announced was the 2013-2014 season line up, which features 16 shows.

Derby: Harrah’s Louisiana Down’s hosted its opening racing weekend festivities along with a viewing of the running of the Kentucky Derby on May 4. A lavish buffet, which included an extensive carving station, shrimp and grits, grilled chicken with vegetables and more than a dozen desserts, was served in the Sky Room. Large screens were set up in the Sky Room for guests to watch the Kentucky Derby race. The running of the Louisiana Downs Super Derby is Sept. 7.
