Designer stitches and knits her path to success.

Faith sometimes transforms devastating obstacles into the brightest opportunities. Such is the case with Melanie Scarlett, owner and designer of Scarlett Proverbs, LLC, who switched careers unexpectedly to create her own clothing and accessories lines.

“I have been creating my entire life purely for passion and for gifts to loved ones,” Scarlett said.

“Prior to turning my designs into a business, Scarlett Proverbs, I was a regional account manager serving business owners, schools and churches across Louisiana and Texas. After I was faced with a medical condition that doctors said is incurable I was unable to drive or work for over 9 months. I decided to resign.”

Scarlett will never forget how hopeless she felt and the pivotal conversation with her mother in the car outside of a local store. She asked her mother, “What am I going to do? How am I going to pay the mortgage?” When her mother suggested she sell clothing and accessory designs, Scarlett wasn’t convinced, saying, “but the market is so saturated. Who on earth would buy my designs?” When they got out of the car and walked into the store, Scarlett received her answer. “A God-sent woman came up to me and asked me to make her five hats like the one I was wearing for Christmas presents. As they say, the rest is history.”

Scarlett said her inspiration as an artist goes back generations. “Our family name, Scarlett, dates back to the twelfth century and means ‘makers and sellers of cloth,’” she said. “Our family history is filled with heritage of artisans including my father, who is a stunning metal artisan and tradesman with a business running 22 years strong. He has always inspired me to follow my passions.”

Katy Larsen, owner of The Agora Borealis in Shreveport, is a mentor and friend who has helped Scarlett launch her career as a full-time designer. “Melanie has an extensive background in theater, and she applies those unique over-the-top techniques to her wearable everyday separates,” Larsen said. “These pieces are not only versatile but also utilitarian with several hidden pockets, attachable accessories and reversible styles. She’s passionate about her line of products and it shows in the quality of her designs.”

Scarlett’s design vision and method typically start with people, then fabrics. “Creating for people is my passion. Without them it would be pointless. The fabrics must be comfortably chic. From there, I may work in my sketch book depending on the complexity, and especially for custom orders. Then I let the fabrics speak to me as I mold them into new life, free from constraining patterns.”

That “lack of restraining patterns” is a hallmark of her ingenious design.

Another striking detail consistent among Scarlett Proverbs designs is that they fit with an awareness of real women and their bodies, along with the way women live.

Comfort and movement coexist with everyday couture style.

“The woman’s demanding lifestyle is always a consideration, which is why all of the clothing should feel comfortable and light,” Scarlett said, “such as the skirts that I make lined with stretch jersey shorts. And honestly, they work well for women like myself that have shapely thighs.”

Scarlett’s “Honey Flowers Dress” is absolutely couture quality, but it is her hats that are coveted for their signaturestyle presence, in large part because of their structure and shape.

“While I really do enjoy the laborintensive, highfashion runway looks, some of my favorite things to make are ready-to-wear pieces such as transitional vests that are great for any season,” she said. “Jumpsuit custom orders are also very popular this season. “It’s always fun turning someone’s design dream into a sketch with fabric swatches, then making it a reality for them.”

The last signature touch is that each Scarlett Proverbs piece comes with a Handmade Scripture Pendant. “The Scripture has always proven itself to be true, filled with wisdom and understanding beyond perception. That has guided me through life, and I want to unobtrusively share it with others. We have received so many requests for the availability to purchase the handmade Scripture pendants alone that they are now for sale, but all of the proceeds go to the Mission organization of the customer’s choice.”

Scarlett stays busy working on requested lines for various boutiques. “Right now I am also working on the upcoming fashion show collection hosted by The Agora Borealis, costumes for the film industry, and several custom orders ranging from ready-to-wear custom designs to bridal to Mardi Gras.”

Melanie Scarlett is available at The Agora Borealis on Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. to meet with customers and to support fellow local artisans. When asked if she had any advice for other creative souls considering a full-time design career, she quoted Proverbs 4:23: "Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life."
