Bring the green indoors

One thing I struggle with is maintaining our flowerbeds. I admire anyone who is successful at gardening and who can pull it off with ease.

With the passing of each season and the dying off of my well-attempted flowers from the season before, I find myself motivated to try again. I’ll pull out all the dead flowers and start with a clean slate, literally.

More recently, instead of focusing on our flowerbeds outside, I’ve decided to redirect that energy indoors. I love neutral colors and accenting them with live greenery around our living space, seems to brighten everything up.

I’ve discovered you don’t have to be an avid gardener or have a prominent green thumb to be successful at bringing some plant life into your home. I’ll share some of my tips for bringing some low maintenance greenery into your home.

One way I brought some plant life into my home was through buying a pair of small green/grass-like plants from Ikea. I found a pair of matching pots to keep them in and put them on my mantle for an easy decoration that could stay up year round. I’ve done very little with these plants after placing them in their pots; all I need to do is water them once a week.

Another way I brought some green into our home was through putting a few succulents in small mason jars. This is an extremely affordable way to bring some color and décor into your home. Many craft stores have imitation succulents, so if you want something with absolutely zero maintenance but look like the real thing, I suggest picking a few of these up.

My other tip is to find decorative vases and pots. Find things that are uniquely shaped, brightly colored, etc. The container that your indoor plant is in can just as much of an attention-grabber as the plant itself. The more unique the container, the better. You can spend a little more on the container itself rather than the plant since the containers can be reusable and last a longer than the plants themselves.

When trying to decide which plants to bring into your home, find plants that don’t require a lot of sunlight. This way, the only upkeep required is a little watering each week, and that’s it.

Some of the benefits of bringing plants into your home are:

• Easy/affordable décor solutions. Most indoor plants won’t break the bank, which is great news for people like me who usually go through several plants a season. Although most indoor plants are pretty resilient, you won’t feel bad should you need to replace them.

• Indoor plants help clean the air. Since our homes are where we spend the most of our time, why not effortlessly help clean the air you’re breathing in?

• Indoor plants may be able to help with your mood and may boost positive emotions.

• Indoor plants can help regulate humidity in the air which is essential for maintaining good health.

Some ideas for common indoor plants include: Spider plant, Dragon tree, gerbera daisy, English ivy, Boston fern, hhilodendron, snake plant, peace lily, aloe vera, areca palm.

The winter months and cold weather have forced my family to stay indoors more often than not, and I’ve found that bringing some plant life indoors has possibly helped lighten the mood. There’s not much I can do at the moment for our flowerbeds outside, but indoors, I’m enjoying playing around with different styles and textures, finding a green decorating solution for our home. So until springtime rolls around, I’ll continue having fun decorating with different greenery indoors.
