Junior League’s Shopping for a Cause ready to spring into action

Another shopping extravaganza this year will celebrate the 15th anniversary of The Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier’s Spring Market on Feb. 26-28 at the Bossier Civic Center.

Alex Person, chair for the 2016 Shopping for a Cause, said the Spring Market is Junior League’s largest event.

“While Shopping for a Cause has held many names and locations throughout the last 15 years, what has remained the same is the wonderful shopping experience. Each year, the community looks forward to shopping with their favorite vendors as they prepare for spring,” Person said.

The Junior League first formed as a Junior Service League in 1930. Three years later, it officially became the Junior League of Shreveport.

“The service-minded young ladies who originally formed our league did not have the same opportunities to volunteer in the community that we have today, so they created their own opportunity,” Person said. “Among its first activities were social casework, the maintenance of two clothing centers for the needy, collection and distribution of the clothing, bookbinding and Braille transcription.”

Person said the community won’t want to miss this year’s Spring Market.

“We’re excited to be back in Bossier at the Civic Center,” Person said. “Along with all of your favorite vendors, we will be having a 15th Anniversary Party on Friday, Feb. 26 to celebrate the last 15 years of the Junior League Market.”

The special 15th Anniversary Party will be held from 7 to 10 p.m.

“We’re excited to show how much the market has changed and how many people the Junior League reached by using the funds raised at the market,” Person said.

The Spring Market is the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier’s largest fundraiser, which supports community projects addressing a variety of issues including childhood obesity, literacy, family life skills and the cultural enrichment of youth. “The annual fundraiser also provides funding that allows us to bestow grants to local nonprofit organizations in need, grant scholarships to young women graduating high school who show a passion for voluntarism and provide invaluable training for our volunteers,” Person said.

Also, new this year is a children’s event, called “Blast off to Breakfast” that will be held Feb. 27. In years past, the Saturday morning event was centered around Easter. This year, the Spring Market is switching things up a bit and taking the big weekend feature in a different direction.

“We wanted to create an event that got children of all ages excited,” Person said. “By teaming up with [Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center], we have been able to create an event that is sure to please everyone. Blast off to Breakfast will offer a fabulous breakfast by Sliver Star and a fun activity from Sci-Port. Being back at the Bossier Civic Center is also an element we are all excited about.”

The Blast Off to Breakfast will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 27. “We’re happy to have Sci-Port come and put on their Junior Rocket Scientists program,” Person said. “This is a weekend you will not want to miss!” Some attending vendors include:

Casually Cashmere, Get Swank, Louisiana Coin & Jewelry, Simply Chic Boutique, Glitz Galore-N-More, Pineapple Patch, RK Collections Boutique and many more.

“My favorite part of being involved with the Junior League is how we are able to give back to the community,” Person said. “All the work we do fundraising helps us help others.”

For those interested in joining a group of women dedicated to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community, information on membership is also available on the Junior League website, www.jlsb.org.

“I cherish the friendships I have made while in the Junior League,” Person said. “I’ve met some of my closest friends while working on different committees and community projects. It’s a joy to work alongside other professional women who have a heart for giving!”
