Pretenses in the Pierremont Mall in March of 2013 after a life-long love
of fashion and helping people look their best. “I was born and raised
right here in Shreveport, and I’ve lived here my entire life except for
the time I spent in Ruston attending Louisiana Tech University. Even
then I had a distinct interest in the fashion industry, and that’s why I
pursued a degree in Merchandising and Consumer Studies,” she said. She
loved dressing her friends and helping people feel better about
themselves, and so turned to working in the retail clothing industry. “I
graduated with my bachelors in 2008 and moved back to Shreveport in
hopes of putting my degree to use. I’ve worked in the retail clothing
industry for 8 years for multiple companies. Over the years I have
learned a lot about the industry, customers, suppliers, trends, fashion,
and business in general,” said Scurlock. She took all of that knowledge
and focused it into starting her own shop. “At some point about 3 years
ago I made my decision that I wanted to pursue my dream of owning my
own boutique. I’ve always loved helping people look their best, there is
really nothing better than the look on someone’s face when they look in
the mirror and genuinely love how good they look in the clothes from my
store. All the huge smiles and excited hugs that I have received over
the years are what inspired me to start Pretenses,” she said. “I wanted
to use all of my experience to make a living making people happy, and
looking their best!” Pretenses offers the latest in women’s designs and
fashions to suit selective tastes. They carry affordable women’s apparel
that is stylish, chic, and designed with the modern woman in mind.
Scurlock travels the country in search of the perfect dresses, tops,
bottoms and outerwear to fill the boutique. They also offer a large
variety of accessories and shoes as well. During her spare time,
Scurlock enjoys being with friends and family, traveling and spending
time outdoors. “I am blessed to have a large family, and many close
friends that I enjoy spending time with. Both my family and friends have
been a tremendous help to me while I’ve been working hard to start and
grow Pretenses,” she said. Opening Pretenses has definitely changed
Scurlock’s life.”I have been overwhelmed by the positive response I’ve
gotten from my customers, they have truly reinforced in my mind that I
made the right decision by taking the leap and opening my own company. I
am really looking forward to the future, and a lifetime of helping my
