There`s a big sister mentality inside of me starting to defend the likes of Shreveport. The one thing Staci Parks promised me before she turned the reins over to me last month was that I would become the biggest advocate for this city in the
heart of Sportsman’s Paradise. She said I would witness firsthand that people in this city are strong and supportive and seeking a change to better this city.
Shreveport and I first met about nine years ago. Ten months ago, I moved here from South Louisiana. Love brought me here, and through networking, I quickly discovered the majority of this city is made up of people who moved for love.
Isn’t that a beautiful connection? I first met Melanie Peacock, the president of the Junior League, through the phone when I worked for the Girl Scouts of Louisiana. I was in fund development and scoping out opportunities for funding programs that build female leaders “who make the world a better place.”
We talked for a little bit about grants and then got on the subject of her children.
Melanie has three young boys who play Little League. It was a surprise to them when they visited the Junior League office to learn that their mother was part of a certain “league” that had nothing to do with baseball.
But similar to baseball, most clubs like the Junior League have members who make up a team. In “A League of Their Own” on Page 17, we meet the members of the Junior League, learn more about the incoming president and what her team of ladies have accomplished.
Winning teams are made up of players who each have unique qualities that bring them a step above the competition. I’m proud to be a new team player in this community, and I can’t wait to learn more!
