Feeling the vibes at Fit Fete! soca dance fitness class.

Do you love soca music? Do you love dancing with other community members? Are you free on Saturdays? If you answered “yes” to all these questions, then Fit Fete! is the place for you.

The ultimate soca dance fitness class is held every Saturday at 10 Taber St. in Roxbury starting at 11 a.m. The high-energy class is hosted by the local dance and wellness company Soca Fusion.

“Think of Zumba,” said Ella Wechsler-Matthaei, founder and executive director of Soca Fusion. “I’m gonna say with the bias, Soca Fusion is better, because it’s so good. The vibes are up from start to finish. You’re gonna get that vibe that is so good, that is carnival culture, soca culture.”

She said that since she is trained out of Trinidad and Tobago, participants will also learn dances from the islands.

“You get this mix all over the Afro diaspora, [and] stay rooted in just the vibes, the joy, confidence, love, community — all of that,” she said. The classes are scheduled for one hour; the movement section is about 50 minutes, including warm-up and cool-down sections.

The routines are designed to target certain areas for building strength as well as to provide a cardio workout.

Wechsler-Matthaei made it clear that at each Fit Fete! Session, all community members are encouraged to show up and show their bodies love, both mental and physical. She said that this experience intentionally centers Black culture, so that community members feel welcome in the space.

“The most important part is when we’re all in there … it’s very Black. That community vibe [and] the family vibe … everyone’s encouraging each other,” she said.

To make the class financially accessible, Wechsler-Matthaei has a sliding scale during this part of the year ranging from $5 to $25. This summer, they plan to move the class to Malibu Beach in Dorchester, which will be free, thanks to funding by Save the Harbor’s Better Beaches program.

“We’ve been with them for a few years, but we’re just big on access and wanting Black and brown people to get their time in for their health: mental, physical, emotional, and all the while just having fun,” she said.

Wechsler-Matthaei encourages community members to try the class for themselves.

“How you move is on you. You don’t have to follow us from the start. … Just show up and do your best. Really see it as a gift to your body, and the longevity of our lives. While we’re here, we might as well treat the body: the mental, emotional, physical — everything with some love, some joy.”
