Abim Thomas
The Boston Bar Association recently honored Abim Thomas with the prestigious Game Changer award, a fitting tribute presented during an evening highlighting women’s leadership and those actively charting the future of the legal profession. As a visionary executive and advocate, Thomas has seamlessly blended corporate excellence with a tireless dedication to uplifting others.
Her career serves as a masterclass in navigating the complexities of the legal sector while maintaining a deeply rooted, intentional commitment to mentorship, diversity and community transformation.
Thomas’ remarkable journey began at Harvard College, where she graduated with a degree in psychology and served as class marshal, followed by Georgetown University Law Center, where she was vice president of the Student Bar Association and an editor for the Georgetown Journal of Gender and the Law. Her subsequent professional trajectory reflects an extraordinary breadth of expertise across the public and private sectors.
She began her career as a litigation associate at Ropes & Gray, later transitioning to public service as deputy chief legal counsel to Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick. Thomas then brought her formidable skills to Goodwin Procter, serving as a litigation partner focusing on white-collar defense, securities and commercial law. Advancing into corporate leadership, she became the head of global litigation at Vertex Pharmaceuticals before stepping into her current role as vice president and associate general counsel in the litigation group at Fidelity Investments.
What truly distinguishes Thomas, however, is her profound impact as a builder of people. As Lauren Martin of Murphy & King noted, Thomas possesses an exceptional ability to guide others through professional highs and lows with wisdom, honesty and encouragement. Described as an “extraordinary connector,” she generously leverages her expansive network to open doors, create opportunities and foster relationships that help others succeed.
This spirit of investment is woven into her extensive civic leadership. A former president of the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association and former Boston Bar Association Council member, Thomas serves as a dedicated mentor through the Women’s Bar Association’s Women’s Leadership Initiative. Her commitment to justice and service is further evidenced by her board roles with Discovering Justice, the Ella Lyman Cabot Trust, the Women’s Bar Foundation, the Epiphany School and her work with the Supreme Judicial Court’s oversight committees.
Her contributions have earned widespread acclaim. She has been named a “Leader in the Law” and one of the “Top Women of Law” by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers magazine and has received the Ida B. Wells Award from Massachusetts Black Women Attorneys.
Thomas embodies the essence of a game changer: redefining the legal landscape not just by the heights she reaches, but by the doors she holds open for those following in her footsteps.
