Kenya Brown-Milfort, founder of Sis It’s Safe.

In honor of Mother’s Day, the Sis It’s Safe organization will host “Motherhood, Healing and Becoming.” on Sunday, May 24 from 2 to 6 p.m. The gathering is described as a special day for Black and brown women and mothers “to pause, reflect and reconnect to dive into the beautiful journey of motherhood, explore the power of healing, and celebrate the art of becoming.”

Founder Kenya Brown-Milfort said the event is centered on community to support Black and brown mothers.

“This is a safe space created for Black and brown women. Authenticity is something very big for us. You come in, you’re embraced and you feel comfortable.

It’s definitely a great community feeling,” she said.

Brown-Milfort anticipates that attendees will receive a sense of relief as they will have a healthy environment to release any emotions they have been carrying.

“We do expect some good emotions to come from this event for sure: some reconnections, some connecting to begin with, [then] feeling purposeful and remembering who we are as women in our core,” she said.

She also shared why it is important to have safe spaces like this event especially for Black and brown women and mothers.

“This is an important event to have because as women, especially Black women, we carry so much. We don’t really have any safe space where we can unpack that a lot of the time,” she said.

Brown-Milfort added that many Black and brown women are walking around making sure that everything in their world stays together, even if they are internally falling apart. She said that safe spaces, like this event, allow women to let their guard down and get the support they need.

“We take the time to allow whatever emotions that we’re feeling [to be let out]…and when we’re ready to be put back together, that’s what we do. We pick each other up, we put each other back together, piece by piece and without judgment.”

Brown-Milfort said a major key of success for the organization is to hold events like this, as they want to provide Black and brown women opportunities to have soft moments to share what they are going through emotionally without any expectations.

She also said that this is the first year of an event like this, as it is a live extension based on her memoir released this year called, “Through Her Eyes: The Mother I Was, The Woman I’m Becoming.” In the book she reflects on her journey through motherhood with her daughter.

Brown-Milfort shared what she hopes participants will take away from attending this special Mother’s Day event as they return to their daily lives.

“We want women to feel lighter. We want them to feel seen, and we want them to feel less alone,” she said. “We’re trying to become better women for our daughters and the women that we support in our community.”
