New Salem’s Theatre in the Park is closing its season with Walking Across Egypt, a play adapted by Catherine Busch from the novel by Clyde Edgerton and directed by Phil Funkenbusch. The play’s protagonist is Mattie Rigsbee, a 78-year old churchgoing, God-fearing woman. Upon discovering a stray dog on her back porch, she decides she’s too old to keep a pet and calls the dogcatcher. Little does she know that the dogcatcher will open her eyes to a world that includes car theft, prison breaks and his nephew, a juvenile delinquent named Wesley, who, like Mattie, is desperate for a family. Joining the drama is Mattie’s over-protective neighbors and her 50-year-old son. Armed with only her faith, sharp wit and mouthwatering cornbread, Mattie is determined to bring Wesley to the side of God and good Southern manners. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and $10 for children 12 and under.
