Kids ages 5-13 are invited to participate in the 8 th annual triathlon hosted by HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital, Scheels and the Springfield Triathlon Club. The mini tri for ages 5 and 6 begins with a 50-meter pool swim, followed by a 0.6- mile bike ride and 0.25-mile run. The triathlon for 6 to 13-yearold participants (broken down into different age categories) begins with a 100-meter swim, followed by a 1.25-mile bike ride and a half-mile run. Safety is a priority for the participants. In the pool, the kids will be assisted by certified lifeguards and local swim team members as needed. As athletes transition from water to wheels, volunteers will guide them, secure their helmets and continue to cheer the young participants on through the run course and to the finish line. First, second and third place awards will be given in each age category for boys and girls. Medals will be given to all finishers because, you know, finishing a triathlon is a big deal. The race entry fee is $25 and includes a T-shirt, goodie bag and refreshments. Registration information can be found at spitriclub.com.
