If you are interested in drinking tea, eating cake and discussing death, an opportunity for you to do so is forthcoming. The Chiara Center is hosting a Death Café on Tuesday, March 12. As strange as such a gathering might seem, the objective is to increase awareness of death in order to help people make the most of their finite lives. These group-directed discussions about death are effective because there are no agendas, objectives or themes. Held nationwide, the Death Cafés are offered on a nonprofit basis, in an accessible, respectful and confidential space, with no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action, and served with refreshing drinks and good food like cake. It is important to know that the purpose of these discussions is not to offer people grief support or a counseling session, and two experienced facilitators, the Chiara Center’s program director Dan Frachey and Grace Lutheran Church’s spiritual director Jan Conrady, will be present. Participants can choose either the 10:30 a.m. session or the 7 p.m. session.
