On Tuesday, Mar. 6, join Debbie Olson, Ph.D., assistant professor of English at Missouri Valley College, for an ECCE Speaker Series presentation that examines the depiction of African American children in the media against the ways in which African American children in the U.S. are prone to violence and criminality, and the ways in which such imagery affirms or subverts contemporary, popular constructions of childhood. Olson is the author of Lost and Othered Children in Contemporary Cinema, Potrayals of Children in Popular Culture: Fleeting Images, The Child in Post-Apocalyptic Cinema, as well as other books and monographs focusing on critical race theory, cultural studies, children in film and more. All ECCE Speaker Series programming is free and open to the public. For more information, visit http://uis.edu/speakerseries or call 206-8507.
