Hailing from Oakland, California, bandmates Stanley Martinez (guitar, vocals, violin), Eve Hannan (bass, vocals), Alexa Pantalone (drums, synth) and Troy Hewitt (guitar, organ, piano, synth) are now on a month-long jaunt across America. Starting in Chicago and covering the Midwest, they’re working their way to Brooklyn and back, playing every day, somewhere, somehow from June 3 through the 23 with more gigs on the way. Not just on a lark, Rays are promoting the March 31 release of Rays, their debut recording of 11 songs, recorded in April of 2016 at Electric Duck in San Francisco by Kelley Stoltz and mixed and mastered by Mikey Young. The collection of cool, jangling sounds reminiscent of early punk-pop, nihilistic, new wave bands of the early 80s is sure to please those not pleased with most modern, corporate, made-in-the-shade music. The live show is something to behold, sitting somewhere between a thing of beauty and a notion of a nightmare, set to expand the mind and worry the soul – and all in a good way.
