Car show weekend features a seven-mile cruise, air and ground displays and more

The Powerlight Abraham Lincoln Super Cruise and Car Show Spectacular is one of the most anticipated car show weekends for automotive enthusiasts in central Illinois. Powerlight weekend presents opportunities to showcase your classic car, meet fellow car lovers, enjoy drive-in movies along historic Route 66, and take in unique air and ground displays.

Celebrate the 100 th anniversary of Route 66 by partaking in the Powerlight Abraham Lincoln Super Cruise Friday, Aug. 4. The seven-mile police-escorted cruise will proceed from the Horace Mann parking lot to Knight’s Action Park. Lineup is from 5-7 p.m., and the Super Cruise begins at 7 p.m. sharp. Cruise participants are encouraged to arrive early for lineup, as complimentary passes to the Route 66 drive-in will be made available to the first 30 cars. The drive-in movies will screen at dusk, and regular admission pricing ($7.50 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and under) will apply.

Start your engines bright and early Saturday morning for the Fifth Annual Powerlight Abraham Lincoln Car Show Spectacular. The car show, free to all spectators, will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. Vehicle registration will occur from 8 a.m. to noon and judging will run from noon to 4 p.m., immediately followed by the class awards ceremony. The entry fee is $15 for judged entries and $10 for display entries only. As in years past, this car show functions as a Brighton “Best of the Best” qualifier, recognizing 45 vehicle classes, 20 specialty awards and 150 trophies.

Additional attractions include ground and air displays such as the Saints Flight medical helicopter; a memorial trophy and presentation featuring at least 15 police agencies honoring fallen officers and veterans, including the recent loss of Springfield Police Department officer David Tapscott; a photo gallery highlighting past Powerlight car shows; a “selfies with Abe” photo booth hosted by Lincoln impersonator Max Daniels; a “drunk goggles” golf cart driving course; and much more.

For more information about the Powerlight Abraham Lincoln Super Cruise and Movie Night and the Powerlight Abraham Lincoln Car Show Spectacular, including information about special hotel rates at the Route 66 Hotel and Conference Center and discounted Knight’s Action Park admission for car show entries, call Greg Cooper at 553-5271 or find Powerlight Abe Lincoln Car Show on Facebook. –Nan Kording
