For over seven years, Torch Tuesday has been Springfi eld’s premier showcase for local and touring hip-hop music. Launched in 2010 by promoter Howard “Torch” Tomas, the weekly nightclub event – until recently located at Bar None at Fifth and Monroe – offered stage time to up and coming area rappers as well as hosting occasional touring acts, including concerts by international artists such as Raekwon (a member of Wu-Tang Clan) and Ras Kas. Tuesday, May 9, marked the fi nal Torch Tuesday with a concert by Chicago artist Hypno Carlito at downtown’s Wet Bar. According to Tomas, the decision to end the weekly event was based on declining attendance and an overall perceived change in the mood of downtown Springfi eld. “Seven years – it’s been a nice run,” he said. “Just about 300 Tuesdays.”
