As our world increasingly turns to digital media, it is easy to underestimate and overvalue the role of libraries as cultural and community centers. But according to Lincoln Library director Nancy Huntley, “The library is much more than a place with books. We are a community space where people from all backgrounds come in person or online to educate and immerse themselves in resources and stories.” This concept is the driving force behind the Friends of Lincoln Library’s first-ever SAME-FEST, which stands for Springfield Area Many Ethnicities. The goal of the festival is to celebrate all that we as individuals have in common and educate the community about the cultural and historical differences that make Springfield unique. All three floors of the library will feature performances, speakers, workshops and special story times created specifically for children. Featured speakers include Rabbi Michael Datz, Dr. Mark DePue, Nancy Huntley and Maryam Mostoufi. Scheduled performances include The Uketopians, Central Illinois Irish Dancers, Springfield International Folk Dancers and spokenword poetry. For more information and the full schedule of events, find Lincoln Library on Facebook.
