A crowd-sourcing campaign via kickstarter.com is underway to renovate and reopen Southtown Sound (formerly South Town Studio). The recording studio, located across the parking lot from the Black Sheep Café and behind Dumb Records near the corner of 11th Street and South Grand Avenue, has not been in use since its previous tenant, recording engineer and musician Brandon Carnes (drummer for the band Looming), departed Springfi eld for Pittsburgh in April of last year. According to the campaign’s Kickstarter webpage, the goal of the fundraising is “to make Southtown Sound a household name not only in Springfi eld but…across the Midwest - even the country.” Kyle Noonan will be the senior audio engineer with the assistance of journeyman recording engineer Mario Cannamela, while B.J. Pearce will act as studio manager, handling booking, scheduling, fi nances and maintenance. All three young men are longtime members of the creative community of Southtown, which centers around Black Sheep Café, an all-ages, alcohol-free and drug-free music venue specializing in punk and other independent music. As of this writing, the campaign, which launched on Nov. 29 and will end on Jan. 6, 2017, had raised $4,362 of its $8,000 goal.
