With more than 50 years of experience as a touring comedian, Gallagher has filmed 14 Showtime specials, made more than 4,000 appearances, and destroyed countless watermelons in the process. But at long last, the comedian is heading out for one final tour along with fellow comedian and his own personal manager Artie Fletcher on their “The Joke’s on You Comedy Tour,” which makes a stop at Springfield’s Hoogland Center for the Arts on Sunday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. The American comedian and prop comic is best known for his “Sledge-O-Matic” sketch where he uses a wooden mallet to smash food items and various objects, culminating in a watermelon. Gallagher has a not-so-sweet history with the saccharine fruit that can be traced back to childhood. As a young boy, Gallagher frequently experienced extreme constipation, which his mother countered by feeding him an excess of fruit, especially melon. Additionally, at age 10, Gallagher dropped a large watermelon on his foot, resulting in two broken toes.
