With the second Obed and Isaac’s scheduled to open in Peoria on Sept. 26, the Conn’s Hospitality Group is being honored by Landmarks Illinois for the Springfi eld company’s work in historic preservation. The company is being recognized for leadership in historic preservation and will receive one of nine Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Awards at a ceremony scheduled for Oct. 22 in Chicago. Karen and Court Conn, the company’s principals, began their preservation career in the 1990s by converting an apartment building on South Second Street into the Inn at 835. The Conns now run a coffee shop, a bed and breakfast, a microbrew pub and a furniture and home décor store in four historic buildings in Springfi eld, where they have focused on downtown property in recent years. They’re now busy renovating a Peoria church built in 1889 that will open as an Obed and Isaac’s in less than two weeks. The new location is four times the size of the Obed and Isaac’s in Springfi eld, and there has been talk of an onsite distillery to produce stronger stuff than beer. And after all the work they’ve done, the Conns deserve a drink.
