GOD AND NORTH CAROLINA This is in response to the recent posting of Jen Sorensen’s nationally syndicated cartoon published in the March 31 edition of Illinois Times. The cartoon was a sarcastic repudiation of North Carolina’s recent statute which prevents transgender men from entering the ladies restrooms, showers and locker rooms or transgender women from using men’s facilities. The cartoonist obviously misconstrued the reasoning behind North Carolina’s decision to uphold the Privacy Act by trying to falsely equate common sense safety issues as trans-bashing.

God created male and female, and for too long our society has seen the proponents of the sexual revolution attempt to deconstruct gender, marriage and anything that God has created and set in order. At the end of the day, North Carolina did the right thing and acted within the provisions of the Constitution and upheld what is right in the eyes of God. Beth Rogers Springfield

BEST OF THE MIDWEST Thank you for your wonderful article about my photograph, “Final Act.” I am so honored to have won the “Best in Show” award. (“Images of Illinois,” by Nan Bulli, March 31.)

I wanted to give you a heads up on one thing – I am a part-time Chicago/ part-time Sandpoint, Idaho, resident. We have a home in Idaho and an apartment in Chicago. The contest registration system only has one resident box, so I probably came through as an Idaho resident. It’s true that I am an Idaho resident, but I spend time in Chicago too. DIMISHING FREEDOM The U.S. attorney general and Democrat attorney generals are indicating that they are considering legal action against people who believe that current climate change is natural and cyclical, as it has been throughout billions of years, instead of caused by humans. Is it any wonder that scientists who are skeptics won’t come forward when their livelihood is threatened?

I can’t imagine the outrage by the media, Democrats, professors and scientists if the government was threatening legal action against anyone who disagreed with the statement that human life begins at conception.

The Founding Fathers considered free speech and a free press so important that it was put in the First Amendment to the Constitution. They did not want the government to control the message.

It is a very slippery slope when the government not only says people that disagree with them should not only not be listened to, they should be forced to shut up.

Everyone should wake up, especially the media, and realize that our freedoms are being rapidly diminished, especially freedom of speech. Jack Hellner Springfield
