JOHN LEWIS ON SCREEN

In October of last year, Brookens Library at UIS, as part of its ongoing “One Book” program, hosted a personal appearance by civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis, D-Georgia, who had just published the second volume of his graphic novel-memoir March. Now the library has acquired the rights to screen a brand new documentary about Congressman Lewis as part of the same program. Get in the Way: The Journey of John Lewis, which has not yet been offi cially released, will receive an advance screening on Tuesday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in the Brookens Auditorium. The fi lm tells the story of Lewis’ life, from his childhood as the son of sharecroppers in rural Alabama and eventual founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNC) through his close association with Dr. Martin Luther King and the Freedom Riders (including the harrowing experience of Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama, in 1965) and fi nally to his ongoing role as venerable legislator in Washington. According to a press release, the 60-minute fi lm is “a riveting portrayal of John Lewis’ personal journey of courage, searing disappointments and hardwon triumphs.” The screening will be free and open to the public.
