MUSEUM MOVE

The Springfi eld & Central Illinois African-American History Museum has a new home. Focused on chronicling the history and legacy of African-Americans in Springfi eld and central Illinois, the museum started out at 521 East Washington St., the former home of Robert’s Brothers Clothing Store. (The museum’s website says that when the store was open, African- Americans could buy clothes there, but they weren’t allowed to try them on.) Douglas King, newly elected president of the museum’s board of directors, says the move to 1440 Monument Ave, which formerly housed the now-closed Museum of Funeral Customs, brings more space and proximity to Lincoln’s tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery. King says the museum is in the process of setting up, with an expected reopening date sometime in February. The museum is also approaching its fourth anniversary, having opened in February 2012.

“The Springfi eld community and other central Illinois communities have really accepted and supported us,” King said. “I’m excited about where we’re going to be.” Check out www.spiaahfmuseum.org for more information.
