GHOSTLY QUIETUDE Being unable to know the time of day the picture was taken, I could not help but notice the shot of downtown that accompanied James Krohe Jr.’s column (“A place for business to live,” Aug 6.) was almost completely devoid of human life on the sidewalks. Only upon close inspection did I finally see what might be a living soul. Sadly, this is more the rule downtown rather than the exception... ghostly quietude at high noon.
Not exactly the image of a bustling urban area of an active capital city. Douglas Mayol Springfield
SHARED HISTORY On behalf of the Christian Science community in Springfield, I thank Rabbi Marks, Rabbi Datz, and the Jewish community, past and present, for a part of our history in Springfield. (“Faith and practice,” Aug. 6).
From May 1899 until December 1910, Christian Science services were held in Temple B’rith Sholom on North Fifth Street. Many thanks now for what was done then. Alvina Williams Springfield
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES The media should ask President Obama, Hillary Clinton and the EPA one simple question regarding their theory and policies on global warming and climate change: If rising CO2 and fossil fuels cause warming, why was the period of 1945- 1976 cooling so much that the scientific community came to a consensus that the earth was heading into a disastrous ice age?
And a simpler follow-up question: Why would we believe the current consensus that is the polar opposite of the previous predictions when they were 100 percent wrong 40 years ago, and why are they so anxious to cut off debate and declare that the science is settled?
Government policies should be based on actual facts and not on an inaccurate computer model where they have to manipulate temperature data because the actual data don’t match the theory. It appears the current administration wants to control our lives and has little concern for facts. Their policies are extremely harmful to the poor, middle class and the overall economy.
How can rich politicians from around the world believe that they can establish policies to control temperatures 100 years out within one degree when they can’t predict economic growth six months out? It is a shame that they are so willing to hold underdeveloped countries and their people down.
Thank goodness for fossil fuels and the thousands of products they produce that have allowed for massive improvements in everyone’s quality and length of life. Every day, more of our freedoms are being taken away by government. Jack Hellner Springfield
