HISTORY | Historical trees and ice cream

This Saturday, The Lincoln Monument Association celebrates the start of summer with an old-fashioned ice cream social, historic tree tour and children’s activities at the bell tower behind Lincoln’s Tomb. The ice cream social features cake, ice cream and lemonade which can be purchased for $5. Historical interpreters and markers containing additional information and photographs will guide visitors through the tree tour, which consists of 20 trees, plus three “tree stones” – graves designed to look like trees. The event will also include educational children’s activities such as leaf rubbing, music by the Springfield Municipal Band and the Wildwood Strings dulcimer group, plus Springfield historian Kathryn Harris. More information about the trees in Oak Ridge Cemetery is available online at http://oakridgecemeterytrees.wordpress.com.
