There’s nothing quite like a soaring vocal harmony that awakens tired ears and excites the soul. That’s the feeling you’ll get when the Sound Celebration Chorus sings. They’re a Springfi eld-based volunteer women’s chorus specializing in four-part barbershop harmony, and they just won a handful of honors at a major choral competition. Earlier this month, Sound Celebration competed in a regional contest in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, held by Sweet Adeline International, a worldwide women’s singing organization. Sound Celebration took second overall among 16 choruses from Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas. They also won fi rst place in the “small chorus” division and received the award for most improved chorus. The group currently has 34 members, some of whom drive to Springfi eld from as far away as Washington and Decatur. Sound Celebration holds open rehearsals at 7 p.m. on Mondays at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, and the group welcomes other women to sing with them and possibly join the chorus.
