MORE BIKE LANES As one who would do a lot more riding, how about putting bikes lanes all over town, not just downtown? Like on the overpass between Sangamon Avenue and Ridgley Avenue (North Grand). This is a major link to shopping and jobs on the east side. Or the main routes around town.

How about considering those who love to ride and even more, those who can’t afford to maintain a car or feed it? How about less dependence on fossil fuels and more on people power? Dominic Giomini Springfield

DRUNKEN SAILOR WEIGHS IN As a former drunken sailor (USN 1968-71), I was somewhat irritated by the comparison Jeffrey Richardson made between a drunken sailor and Jeffrey Parsons (Bruce Rushton, “Another day, another hearing,” Nov. 6). Unlike Mr. Parsons, I was spending my own money as a “drunken sailor.” Gray Pierson Springfield

OPINIONS ALL AROUND I especially enjoy reading the opinions of James Krohe Jr., and am pleased he chose a fraction of the dubious nonprofits for this weeks’ Dyspepsiana (“Charity cases,” Nov. 6). He touched on the tip of the iceberg of tax avoidance, leaving the rest of us who do pay taxes to pick up the tab.

I also like to read the political opinions of Rich Miller, though I seldom agree with his onerous conclusions. This week’s column (“A two-faced race,” Nov. 6) especially hits home for me with his parting shots at Governor-elect Rauner who, in spite of the chicanery Democrats present at every statewide election, won with the support of the majority of serious voters. A civic-minded non-politician elected in Illinois is very rare indeed. I have only known a couple. Kevin Knox Tallula

“BEST OF” BOOSTS BIZ Every year I look forward to the “Best of” edition (“Best of Springfield,” Oct. 30). I love how much it supports local businesses and shows the hard work put in by Springfield business owners.

This year, I was very flattered to be nominated and chosen as one of Springfield’s best photographers. It feels surreal to me to be a college kid nominated with so many photographers that I idolize. Thanks to your “Best of” contest, I have already attracted new customers. I am grateful for the “Best of” contest and for your magazine. I look forward to every new edition. Gracie Tierney Cornland

CONSIDER SOLAR PANELS Coal-fired energy has been around a long time and 97 percent of scientists agree that it is changing our climate. A small group (the 1 percent) say not so. Why? Follow the money.

How about spending some tax money to put the latest solar panels on buildings and homes around the city instead of spending more on fossil fuel power plants? Jobs would be created and, if done wisely, solar would feed (sell) power back to the grid.

The status quo only benefits those who control it. Think of the future. Think local. Domini Giomini Springfi eld
