HISTORY | Not your average fall festival

For most of us in the 21 st century, fall is synonymous with fun. It’s a time for parties, pumpkin carving, corn mazes, costume contests, apple cider, trick-or-treating, haunted houses and more. However, in Lincoln’s 1830s New Salem, fall meant it was time for pioneers to prepare harvest and homestead for the long, cold months ahead. This Saturday and Sunday, make the quick trip north to Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site in Petersburg for an 1830sstyle fall festival. On both days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., costumed interpreters will demonstrate tasks such as soap making, butter churning, wool spinning, meat smoking, wild game cooking, fruit and vegetable preservation and more. There is no admission for this event, but a suggested donation of $4 per adult, $2 per child or $10 per family. For more information, visit lincolnsnewsalem.com.
