FILM | Ideal identities The first event of the University of Illinois Springfield Engaged Citizenship Experience Speakers Series is the film Two Spirits. Nominated for a GLAAD Media Award 2012, the documentary tells the story of young Navajo Fred Martinez who was murdered in a hate crime. Fred was what the Navajo call a nadleehi or male-bodied person with a feminine nature. Navajos and other Native-American cultures hold places of honor for people who embody “two spirits,” some tribes seeing them as the saviors who brought the sexes back together after separation. Kerry Poynter, UIS LGBTQA Resource Office director, will moderate a discussion following the screening. For more info, visit http://twospirits.org. See also
