It’s probably pretty easy to feel like no one cares about you when you’re living on the street, especially around Valentine’s Day. “Often times, these people are isolated from family and friends and suffer depression and loneliness on holidays such as this,” says Linda Gessaman, executive director of Homeless United for Change in Springfi eld. That’s why HUC led a project to give valentines to Springfi eld’s homeless people last week. Churches, schools and families volunteered to make cards with notes of encouragement. One family even made 400 cookies to accompany the valentines. The cards and treats were distributed at Washington Street Mission, Inner-City Mission and Contact Ministries on Valentine’s Day. “We are so locked into thinking that the social agencies need to do everything,” Gessaman said. “There are things we can do also in a safe way. The Heart-to-Heart Project is a way to get the message to homeless individuals that we care, the community cares, but often times we do not know what to do.”
