A group that provides peer support to veterans is looking for Springfi eld-area volunteers.

Organizers from Illinois’ Warrior to Warrior program, a nonprofi t operated by Health and Disability Advocates and the Illinois National Guard, are looking for volunteers across the state to join in on the new program’s goal of providing every Illinois National Guard unit with a volunteer veteran.

The group aims to help veterans and their families with issues in areas including employment, education, physical and mental health, housing, legal work, fi nances and family relationships. By training selected veterans in communication skills and community resources, Warrior to Warrior is working to help veterans help their peers.

Volunteers range from students to retired service members and come from all branches of the military.

According to information from the program, ideal volunteers are well adjusted to civilian life, sincere in their desire to help veterans, able to listen actively, can work without judgment of others based on cultural, personal and religious values and are available 10 to 15 hours per month.
