GARDEN GREATS CAP CITY It’s amazing what a few plants can do when they’re in the hands of a skilled gardener, and it’s even more amazing what a few gardeners can do when they work together. Every year, the Springfi eld Civic Garden Club cultivates a more beautiful Springfi eld with grants to local nonprofi t organizations, funded by SCGC’s annual plant sale in May. This year, the seven grants totaled $5,862.76 and went to: • Pleasant Plains Historic Site to replant the Clayville Garden with native plants. • Lincoln Memorial Garden to build a handicap-accessible walkway. • Dana Thomas House to put plants in the courtyard urns. • Slow Food Springfi eld to plant apple trees in parks. • Lincoln Memorial Garden and Springfi eld Zoology Society for a children’s garden at Henson Robinson Zoo. • The Executive Mansion for equipment and hanging planters. • Friends of Shelbyville for trees and shrubs for the park’s sunken garden. The Springfi eld Civic Garden Club was founded in 1929 and is one of the largest garden clubs in the nation. For more information, check out their website at www. scgc-il.org. See also
