Editor’s note

Every spring it is only natural for IT to combine our home and garden issue with observance of Earth Day. A global policy of reliance on renewable fuels may seem beyond reach, but installing a solar collector on our own roof is not. Congress may not recognize energy conservation as a fuel source but any of us can feel the difference a few extra inches of attic insulation makes. Local, organic and sustainable food policies make a lot more sense when we harvest a row of home-grown spinach. We mark Earth Day by localizing the global and globalizing the local. In our own homes and gardens we begin to save the earth. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
