The Illinois Audubon Hummingbird Festival will be held at Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site on Saturday, Aug. 4. Mary Hedrick of the Sangamon Audubon chapter will capture, band and release birds to record migration data. The public is invited to watch and come and go during the three hours. The public is also invited to adopt a bird for a $5 donation to the Illinois Audubon Society’s land acquisition fund – a fund earmarked for the protection of Illinois wildlife habitat. Donors receive an attractive, signed certificate and are notified if their bird is ever recaptured. Information relating to the life and habits of these tiny birds will also be available at the event.
