Construction at the Dana-Thomas House continues, but the historic site’s Sumac Shop remains open. That is the site of a book signing by Roberta Volkmann, author of a new biography, Susan Lawrence: The Enigma in the Wright House. The book chronicles the complex and independent lifestyle of the fascinating woman who commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to remodel her deceased father’s home in 1902. Susan Lawrence assumed several names and many roles as she entertained lavishly, traveled the world, championed the rights of women and African-Americans, shared her time and money and led seekers of spiritual truths. Volkmann says she “attempted to separate the myths from the facts” to tell Lawrence’s little-told story. Besides being an author and art educator, Volkmann has volunteered at the Dana-Thomas House for more than 30 years. The home is expected to reopen in late 2011. The book can be purchased at the Sumac Shop, open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
