Still alternative after all these years
I well remember the night in 1975 when the first issue was laid out for the printer. I’ve not had children, and I had nothing to do with conceiving this one, but birthing a newspaper can’t be much different (for fathers at least) from birthing a child – the tension, the exhilaration, the exhaustion.

Planned Parenthood sets the record straight
I am disappointed in Alveda King and the Springfield Right to Life’s attacks on women’s reproductive self-determination. Alveda King and her followers are running a scare campaign to keep women from seeking reproductive health care and limit their ability to make private, personal medical decisions.

Bleeding-heart Republicans
Who says that Republican Congress-critters don’t care about minorities in our society? Why, at this very moment, they are pushing hard to pass a $372 billion federal program to lift the economic fortunes of just one minority group – a far more generous proposal than Barack Obama has even dared to contemplate.

Democrats look for sunny spots in gloomy election outlook
The House Democrats say their candidates are sticking to a strict and intense precinct walking program. That, plus the end of the Rod Blagojevich trial, allowed them to stabilize their campaigns. They see polls showing their candidates doing better than they were and believe they’ve turned the corner.

TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN
Almost everyone knows about St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the not-for-profit research hospital that specializes in cancer and never charges children in need who don’t have insurance. Not everyone knows about their Dream Home Giveaway program, which raffles off big fancy houses and puts the proceeds toward helping more kids.

Nurturing natural heritage
Five years ago, a 68-acre stretch of land just south of New Salem, with its unique hills and valleys, had one thing in common with most of the rest of Illinois – it looked nothing like what the state’s first European settlers would have seen 200 years ago.

Grabbing art with both hands
We track the sounds to a classroom where kids wearing blousy paint-splattered shirts are gleefully brush-stroking watercolors on poster boards, in groups clustered here and there on the floor, or in studied solitude at a table. Older girls, teenagers probably, bustle purposefully about, helping kids, cleaning up spills, giving instructions.

AMY ALKON
I’m 28 and my boyfriend of five years is 29. I’m ready to get married, and he’s flat-out not, but wants us to stay together. Our maturity levels vary greatly.
