Being trapped inside a computer is the stuff of 80s science fiction movies for most, but four students from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are trying to make it a reality.
They’re designing a theme park ride inspired by the 1982 Disney movie Tron.
Marchelle Gant, who grew up in Springfield, will join her team members and 16 students from across the country at Disney Imagineering in Glendale, Calif., to compete as finalists in the Walt Disney ImagiNations Competition from June 8-16.
The competition challenges teams to demonstrate their creative, technical, artistic and business skills by designing a ride, attraction, hotel or a land within an existing Disney theme park or resort. Projects can also create an entirely new theme park, resort or themed restaurant. Participants work for several months on their pitch and presentations, which are evaluated by a team of Imagineers in California, Paris and Florida.
The U of I team’s ride, TRON: Gridlock, is an action/adventure ride in which guests are taken prisoner inside an elaborate computer system resulting in a high-speed chase.
Attractions from other teams include an eco-conscious resort based on The Little Mermaid, rides based on Tarzan and The Lion King, a museum of millennial culture inspired by “Wall-E” and a choose-your-own-adventure experienced called “Pandora’s Peak:
Race for the Voyager’s Cup.”
